After adjusting voltages and achieving 4.2Ghz overclocking, I'm facing temperature issues. During stress testing all eight cores, the process halted when temperatures rose steadily and became unbearable. The test stopped at around 85°C. I'm curious about the point at which these chips begin to throttle and how much voltage I can safely push, given my Asus M5A97 R2.0 LE motherboard lacks VRM heatsinks. My current setting is 1.3V, and I plan to switch to an aftermarket cooler soon. I'm seeking advice on optimal temperatures for throttling, suitable coolers for both Intel and AMD, and any recommendations.

TJ Max offers a 62°C package temperature, they suggest throttling at around there, at 85°C you’re definitely throttling and likely near thermal shutdown. AMD advises keeping the chip under 62°C, as temperatures in the 80s can damage the CPU, which isn’t an Intel chip and won’t run well in the upper 80s to lower 90s. My advice is to disable overclocking until you find a better cooler, before risking the CPU or motherboard. The VRM on that motherboard is also quite limited for serious overclocking. What’s your budget for a cooler? You don’t need anything too costly.

TJ Max offers a 62c package temperature; they suggest throttling at around there, with 85c likely causing significant throttling and possibly thermal shutdown. AMD advises keeping the CPU below 62c, as temperatures in the 80s can damage the CPU, especially not on an Intel chip which struggles above the 80s and into the low 90s. My advice is to disable overclocking until a better cooler is available, before risking the CPU or motherboard. The VRM on that motherboard is also insufficient for serious overclocking. What budget would you consider for a cooler? You don’t need anything too costly.

Definitely improve performance. I own a Hyper EVO 212 and can safely push my FX-8300 to 4.3 GHz across all cores. Stable at around 4.5GHz is possible, but I prefer to stay safe. I also have an MSI 970 gaming board.
