Overclocking 4790k
Overclocking 4790k
I've owned an i7-4790K for a while now, and I'm noticing a drop in FPS. I'm considering overclocking but have no experience with this process. I need someone knowledgeable to advise me if it's safe to do so with my current configuration. Here’s what my setup looks like:
CPU: Intel i7-4790K
GPU: Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme 11 GB
Motherboard: Asrock Anniversary Z97
Water Cooler: Corsair H100-i
Power Supply: Cooler Master EX2 625W
SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB
Memory: Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600mhz 4x8GB
I previously tried overclocking my 4790K but experienced issues like bluescreens or frequent restarts, so I stopped. I’m unsure if my motherboard can handle this kind of adjustment. Could you let me know if it’s feasible and suggest any changes that might help? Thanks a lot.
You're wondering if switching your power supply unit could allow you to safely overclock your CPU.
Overclocking comes with risks, so ensure your power source is reliable before proceeding.
Determine the appropriate wattage based on your equipment and overclocking needs.
Wattage isn't the main concern. A 650 should work, but you'll want a high-quality gold-rated device. Options include Seasonic Focus Plus, EVGA g3 series, Corsair TX, RX or RMx.
I think I should purchase the Seasonic Focus GX-650 80+ Gold Full-Modular and give it a shot. That might clarify why my PC would restart during overclocking attempts. If you have any tips on overclocking, please share them. Thanks a lot for your assistance!
Open your BIOS interface, navigate to the OC Tweaker section at the top, find the "CPU ratio" option and adjust it to "all core," entering 45 on the following line. Move down to the "voltage configuration" area and set the "CPU voltage offset" to "offset mode." Choose -0.01V as the initial offset value. Restart your system and enter Windows. Execute OCCT's "small data set" test for ten minutes, noting the CPU's core voltage (VCORE). If the system remains stable, return to BIOS and reduce the offset to achieve approximately 1.15V VCORE. Adjust incrementally by ±0.02V for precise calibration.
I got my Seasonic Focus GX-650 and followed your detailed instructions carefully. Right after starting the OCCT test, my PC crashed immediately. My cores are running at 25-29 degrees during idle, but I'm overclocked to 4.5 with a good cooler, so overheating isn't likely the issue. Could there be another cause for the crashes?
