I recently increased my CPU's speed and its temperatures reached very high, around 80°C. After removing the overclock, I experienced significantly lower frame rates while playing games, which was unexpected.

CPU oc is not a good idea. You have to worry all the time about your temp .If you have a "bad" cpu you cant do much about it,in the worst scenario you allready damaged your cpu by overclocking more than recommended .
I suggest you to Overclock your gpu (if possible ) using benchmarks (you will understand easily where are your gpu's limits ,but in the best case you get 10-15 more fps.
What games do you play(and have problem) ? And more specific what cpu and gpu do you own?

Don't go overclocking when temperatures rise too much. If you're using the built-in cooler, it's best to upgrade it soon if you intend to overclock, as it gets quite hot.

Is 80c the ideal limit for CPUs? You're about to attempt overclocking for the first time.

Axlrose asks if 80C is the limit for CPUs and mentions planning an overclock. She notes it depends on the specific overclock and cooler used. It won't immediately damage the system at 80 degrees, but prolonged exposure could cause wear.
