Overclock or Upgrade?
Hey everyone,
Here’s what I’ve got:
Asus x79 Deluxe motherboard
32gb DDR3 1866 xmp profiled RAM
I7-4930k @43x100 (4.3Ghz)
Noctua D14 CPU cooler
Antec 1900 with 8 fans running
Gainward GTX 1080 GLH edition
Some SSDs and other components
All the parts are close to their 5-year mark. The current 4.3Ghz OC runs at around 30°C idle and 60°C during prime95 tests.
A full custom cooling solution would cost me roughly $1000 AUD if I install it myself. If you’re facing a similar situation, would you opt for a higher overclock and liquid cooling, or spend about $1200 AUD to upgrade the motherboard, CPU, and RAM to the next-gen i9/3xx boards and DDR4 RAM?
60C remains impressive, no special loop required to push further. It seems you can reach 4.6Ghz without hitting 75C in Prime95. Upgrading isn't necessary.
