I want to boost my FX-6300's performance. It's currently running at 3.8ghz, and I'm aiming for a bit more—possibly 4.1 or higher if feasible. My motherboard is the GA-970A-UD3P. I need to find out if overclocking is possible and what steps I should take.

The simplest method to increase clock speed is by utilizing AMD overdrive. A free tool comes with it, performing stress tests to ensure your processor stays cool.
Your motherboard is in good shape. The amount of performance boost depends on your case cooling and the quality of the cooler for the processor.

Yes, using that program should handle everything automatically for you.

You need to perform a few mouse clicks.
You won't achieve the optimal OC, but you'll get a solid safe overclock, which is usually enough for most users.

But remember to try the Autoclock tab when you first use it.

I increased the speed a bit to 3.8 but then at 4.1 the computer slowed down, so I restarted it.

It's likely you require an improved cooler.

Likely yes. I own a stock cooler with an FX 6300, but its cooling performance isn't ideal for high speeds.

3.8 or 3.9 should work on the stock cooler. However, it tends to get noisy.
