You can obtain PS elements or I have some artists who use the paint tool Sai. It’s around $40 or so for a lifetime license. It can also open PS files.

There are numerous viable options available. For simple photo adjustments, especially if you prefer quick fixes without investing in software or learning new programs, I suggest trying Google+ Photos. Don’t dismiss it before giving it a shot! Photoshop Express offers free online editing with JPEG support, though it’s best suited for basic tasks. If you decide to use GIMP, explore the resources mentioned—like this article—to improve its performance. For more advanced workflows, DarkTable is worth considering; it closely mimics Lightroom but may gain traction as Adobe shifts away from its ecosystem. If you’re on Windows, Linux LiveCDs or alternatives like LightZone (which runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac) are viable choices. Before committing to a paid license, you might find it useful to purchase a used copy of Photoshop CS6 from someone who upgrades to CC, ensuring you retain access without ongoing updates.

Sure, I'll check if I can locate a budget-friendly version of CS6.
