I’m planning to get a new PC soon and feel that $110 for the operating system seems too high. I currently use Windows 8 on my laptop and I’m curious if it’s possible to copy the data from that hard drive to my new one.

You might simply remove the HDD from your current laptop and connect it to the new one. If the OEM license is turned off, contacting Microsoft directly should restore it properly.

However, if you duplicate the drive and attempt to use them simultaneously, your key will be blocked, and you'll need to purchase two separate keys.

No, that's not possible. Linux is open-source and free, while Ubuntu offers a user-friendly experience. If you're looking for Windows keys, you can explore affordable options by searching online.

There are many issues with this idea. First, it would need all the drivers from his laptop already installed, then he’d have to add drivers for new hardware—this creates complications. Second, if the hardware is almost identical, just swapping the motherboard usually fixes it, but with a complete system change, it might not work. However, since the keys are registered to the original hardware, they won’t recognize the new setup. You shouldn’t share unknown information. @PandaCruncher, you’re right about the bottom key. Manufacturers often include a placeholder key on laptops. This one hasn’t been used before, so it can be used on your new PC without problems. Companies do this to save time and effort.

You seem to be posting a lot on the forum, which makes it clear you're knowledgeable. Really sorry for that, I didn't realize you had such insight until I looked at your posts.

It’s a great way to demonstrate your professionalism. Having a college degree adds credibility to what you say. I wasn’t sure how that would affect my confidence, but it definitely helps ensure accuracy over time.
