OS on SSD or Hard Drive?
Your Seagate Expansion desk supports a 2TB drive and operates on USB 3.0, delivering solid performance for 185MB per second read and write. If you upgrade to a reliable model, it could work well—though I’d prefer a better option than the current HDD since past experiences with newer drives aren’t great.
I'll just keep working on the $60 for a 1TB internal drive for a little while.
Start with the HDD, then add an SSD later. After installing the SSD, set up your operating system unless you prefer slower startup times.
You might be able to duplicate your operating system by creating two partitions, as described earlier. However, this adds a few more steps to complete. In my opinion, the quick performance of an SSD makes expansion less appealing, especially since you already have an external HDD. The SSD isn't limiting your storage capacity—it's simply offering faster access. Once the OS is installed, a 120GB SSD should leave around 80GB available. Moreover, SSDs have become more reliable over time, capable of handling massive write operations without failing.
All my clients today suggest buying the SSD first, then adding the HDD or HS-SSD when needed for more space.
