SSD powers the operating system and primary applications, internal SSD handles gaming, external storage is reserved for media files. Avoid installing games on an external drive—especially with USB 2.0—since it’s not ideal.

It might function, though I wouldn't suggest it.

Start with SSD first. I suggest the Samsung 850 EVO or Crucial BX100/MX200. The reason? It saves you time when installing an OS again. You receive a faster OS sooner. A USB 3.0 powered external HDD is more than enough for gaming.

Acquire an HDD, install a slightly smaller partition than the SSD for the operating system, and reserve another for general use. When an SSD becomes available, duplicate the OS partition onto it, boot from the SSD, and format the HDD partition while expanding it.
