You need enough swap space for your system to run smoothly. With 40 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD, plus 8 GB RAM, you should allocate at least 2-3 GB of swap. Consider setting up a dedicated partition for the SSD where you'll store most games, leaving enough room for other files and operations.
It depends on your situation. If you're not doing anything that forces a swap, you probably won't need it at all. Linux is better at using real memory instead of swapping files to the HDD compared to Windows. If you require a lot of extra space, place your swap partition on your 1TB HDD. Windows suggests doubling your memory capacity. (Take it as you will). If you're still unsure, go with 4-8GB.
