You could try installing Linux such as Lubuntu or similar. It's lightweight, but you'll need to adapt to it—it works very differently from Windows. You'll have to get comfortable with terminal commands, only needing a few essential ones. I'm uncertain about Windows either; XP is no longer supported. If you're okay with that, it's fine to proceed.

DOS would function excellently. Seriously, Win XP is near the limit for this setup. You might want to try Windows 95/98/200 if you prefer staying on Windows.

You can choose Lubuntu, which combines Ubuntu with LXDE. It's different from other distros because Ubuntu is straightforward to understand.

It's possible I wasn't considered an option. You asked if they meant something simple to learn, not just visual-based. I don't want to inconvenience anyone with complex commands.
