Over the years my key has stopped functioning, so I’ve resorted to opening windows instead of buying a new one. I haven’t faced any issues with it yet. It’s unclear if this counts as piracy since I already own a copy, but the key no longer works.

It doesn't matter if someone has earned enough from their product, as long as they aren't acting clearly against consumers. It's unethical to tell someone it's okay to pirate if they're not doing anything blatantly anti-consumer.

You can retrieve the original ISO from Microsoft directly and avoid enabling it. Alternatively, try the Windows 10 preview until it ends or purchase an inexpensive key from sites like g2a.com/ebay. All these options will function, though activating it may trigger an annoying alert—you can tolerate that.

It’s easy to find a pirated or cracked version of an OS with almost no visible difference. I’ve done this before. The main concern should be the ethical issue—would you accept others using your work without compensation?
