I’m preparing for an upcoming build and need to install the system with the retail version of Windows 7. Once updates are applied, I plan to upgrade to Windows 10. Regarding the license key, will the old retail Win7 key remain valid after setting up Windows 10?

Consider the win 7 partition, upgrade to version 10 (break the key if needed), load the image, then disable the 7 partition.

Windows 7 keys remain valid after upgrades. Microsoft is informed of your changes and will handle licensing properly.

They’re essentially providing free Windows 10 keys even though I can use a Windows 7 key on another machine. Correct?

In theory, that's the case. It seems they probably won't pay attention because for Windows 10, the updated keys that aren't serial keys now let Windows 7 keys work elsewhere.
