I tried my Optiplex for a while and decided to upgrade the RAM. After delivery, I realized the notch on the new RAM doesn’t match the motherboard slot. I’m wondering if this is meant to prevent upgrades or if I made a mistake.

It seems you've purchased a DDR4 model instead of DDR3 or DDR4. You should return the incorrect one.

Motherboards work best with DDR3, DDR4 or sometimes both depending on the model. It’s not just about choosing one type.

A ram slot can only accommodate one type—DDR3 or DDR4. Some special boards offer both, but most provide only one or the other. Many Optiplex 7010 CPUs are strictly DDR3-compatible. If a board uses DDR4 slots, those CPUs won’t work without a custom controller. Generally, Intel chips before the 6th generation need DDR3, while newer ones require DDR4. AMD Ryzen processors also need DDR4. You can use an adapter to bridge older and newer systems, but it’s not practical for this situation.

I hope I understood this earlier, since I waited two weeks for delivery and used the money. Thank you for the details.
