I got a Dell Optiplex 380 from an auction and am aiming to convert it into a fully functional modern PC. Upon receiving it, I found the Windows XP professional account password written on a note card. After losing that card, the system remains locked with minimal CPU performance and only about 2 GB of RAM. I searched for ways to bypass the password but had no success. I didn’t try using a Linux USB drive either. I’m wondering if it’s possible to purchase an SSD and install Windows on it after removing the old HDD, ensuring compatibility. I’ve read that updating the BIOS is necessary, but I’m unsure how to proceed with that. Additionally, I want to confirm whether the new RAM will work with the existing CPU.

It's strange that the Dell support lists 4 GB of RAM while my PC shows only about 2 GB. It seems likely the previous owner altered it, possibly to install Windows XP Pro.

Since the computer is secured with a password, we're unable to assist further.
I'll mention that the best option to upgrade a 10-year-old PC into a modern one is to purchase a new machine. I still use my C2D rig, but beyond low-end or older games or simple tasks, it won't perform well. I hope you didn't invest more than $50, as that could have been a C2Q version.
