Options for internet in rural areas
I reside on an island in Lake Erie and am seeking ways to boost my internet performance. My current setup offers a fixed point wireless with a 22Mbps download limit (rarely exceeding 14Mbps) and a 3Mbps upload speed (often below 2Mbps). I typically experience around 40ms latency, but occasionally encounter sudden spikes reaching 300-400ms, which affect gaming and voice calls. I’m evaluating options like subscribing to another connection via the same provider or leveraging the decent 4G service available nearby to connect a MiFi/Jetpack device through Verizon (US provider). Using my mobile hotspot doesn’t cause noticeable drops in speed or latency.
I’m considering channel bonding a 4G link with other broadband sources using affordable tech. I’m open to buying a used business-class router from Ebay equipped with multiple WAN ports. My monthly cap is 20GB on AboveUnlimited, so I’m managing bandwidth carefully.
If needed, I might connect to a budget residential router to link all devices—tablets, TVs, PCs, etc.—and explore channel bonding or VPN solutions. I’m not aiming for the newest speeds; I’m content with around 15Mbps per connection and want to avoid performance issues before relying on my hotspot.
I could also use a VPN like Speedify combined with Connectify (though it may add latency). Alternatively, setting up multiple Verizon Jetpacks or MiFi devices alongside a business-class router with several WAN ports could work. I’d need to manage costs carefully—estimated around $190 per month for two unreliable fixed connections and two 4G links, plus $40/month for the dual 4G plans. This setup would let me stream 720p without hitting caps, handle gaming, and prioritize bandwidth for essential tasks.
I’d likely gain valuable networking knowledge along the way. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
