I'm searching for a low-power Xeon processor compatible with PFSSense, suitable for a router setup. I'm open to red or blue CPUs, but prefer models that run continuously.
You might choose a H310M low-cost board paired with a Pentium G5400, as Xeons don’t offer much advantage in longevity compared to standard CPUs when it comes to prolonged use. It’s only worth looking into if you believe ECC adds value.
It's not really suited for constant operation. Custom-built pfSense devices run on laptop hardware, which you wouldn't normally expect to handle 24/7. It remains quite dependable and might even perform better due to lower power consumption, keeping things cooler during regular use. The extra cost could be justified, but the savings in energy use would likely only become noticeable over years.
