In my home I use a Verizon FiOS-G1100 router with 80Mbps upload and download speeds. Around 20 devices are connected, including consoles, smart TVs, phones, computers, and tablets. Even with just a few devices online, the connection sometimes struggles with basic tasks like streaming or multiplayer games on PS4/X1. I’m looking for tips on settings or general advice to keep the home network stable. Should I use a separate router besides the Verizon one? How do you manage gaming across different consoles in the same house? My PS4 is connected via Ethernet and my brother’s X1 uses Wi-Fi, which causes lag. Switching the PS4 to Wi-Fi often worsens the issue even when the router is nearby. Are there specific online settings on the Verizon portal that help both devices play online without problems? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
Typically, more wireless devices lead to poorer gaming performance. Wireless adds extra delay compared to wired connections, not just because of distance but also when many gadgets are trying to connect simultaneously. Edit: Could the Xbox be connected via cable instead?
Based on the age and wire quality of your home, you might also consider powerline connectivity. If the house is old or the wiring isn’t up to standard, the results could be limited, though it remains an alternative. There’s the possibility of enabling QoS (Quality of Service), but it mainly benefits data traffic once it reaches the router. It doesn’t really improve performance during wireless connections or on most consumer routers, which typically don’t allow prioritizing one client over another for airtime.
