I'm seeking an upgrade for my i5 9400f because it feels outdated when running newer games. My motherboard is a PRIME H310M-A R2.0, which only supports 9th generation Intel CPUs. Considering my budget, the i7-9700k seems like a solid option since I can find a used one for around £150 and it offers more cores and threads. Would it be wiser to purchase a new motherboard and CPU together, staying within a £200 limit? My GPU is a 3050, so that's not an issue. Thanks ahead!

Performance gains from 9400 to 9700K in games are limited or nonexistent for certain titles. A completely different CPU and board might be more effective, perhaps using an older 5600 with a refurbished motherboard.

You might want to consider a reliable motherboard, especially since you're new to PC building. I don’t have specific advice, but you could look into popular options like the ASUS PRIME B550 or MSI MEG 16. Just start with something well-reviewed and easy to install.

For a budget CPU like Ryzen 5 5600, any suitable board works fine, B550/A520 is a good choice to avoid BIOS issues. B450/A420 tends to be more affordable but might require a BIOS update. Ensure the board includes necessary ports such as USB or HDMI/DP.
