One of the B850 boards shared here is excellent. As a dedicated Asrock supporter, I’d advise avoiding them in the 800-series since they’re currently struggling with issues.

Yes, you can still use those models. Within the budget range I found an ASUS TUF Gaming B850-E WiFi for £190 and an ASUS TUF Gaming B850 with extra features for £199. Their variations are clear, so it’s safe to try one of them. Let me know if you need more details!

It would function well, most options are ready to use. The main concern is what features you require or need.

You seem uncertain about choosing ASUS. You’ve seen many options and keep seeking advice, especially after being suggested in earlier discussions. It’s clear you’re struggling to decide on purchasing one, as they don’t seem to deliver the value you expect in terms of performance and reliability.

I understand if it seems unusual to keep asking. I believe I grasp most parts well, but with motherboards I struggle to comprehend their differences, numbers, letters, and whether to compare two options with a £20 gap. I’m content with any brand, so I’m leaning back toward the first ones I saw since I’m unsure what else to choose. The MSI board mentioned is around £230, which exceeds my budget, and the gigabyte model has many online discussions about problems. I mainly look for a solid, reliable board that works well with the GPU I’ll have in three years.

The issue starts with defining what means "better." You can quickly ignore performance when considering AMD chips for new or intermediate users. For everyday gamers and regular users, there’s no noticeable difference between B850/X870 boards. What really matters is a few key aspects like connectivity options. This includes the number and speed of USB ports, Wi-Fi 6E versus 7, PCIe Gen5 M.2 drives, and the primary PCIe slot. Ethernet speed is also relevant for some. These details are usually clear in the board specifications and can be compared using resources like PCPartpicker. If you want deeper insight, this guide provides more specifics.

Glad you brought this up. Arguably the most useful tool in comparing all kinds of motherboards amongst the AM5 platform. Specifically, the last row helps a lot when you're trying to determine how many PCI-E NVME drives you can actually install and have work at max speeds, which isnt always spelled out clearly on spec sheets

I’m a regular gamer, that’s all. For instance, I still have two SSDs and haven’t switched to NVMe since they’re still functioning well. I just need freedom for my GPU or CPU and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Likely the most straightforward list of criteria.
