Optimize your i9-12900K with Z690 Hero by boosting memory capacity and ensuring compatibility.
Hello, I'm working mainly on music production with my PC. My current specs are: CPU - Intel i9-12900K, Motherboard - ASUS Maximus Z690, RAM - G.Skill Trident Z (2×16 GB total). I'm facing memory usage problems and need advice.
1. Can my system handle 2×64 GB RAM sticks?
2. What's the optimal maximum memory setup for this configuration?
Thanks for your help!
The Asus MMO page lists a maximum of 192GB, but the edit suggests it could be for four slots, meaning 48GB total. Updated September 20, 2025 by leclod.
The instructions mention supporting various memory sizes but seem unclear about how larger capacities fit. It’s worth checking if 64GB modules are permitted and consulting the motherboard compatibility guide on the support site. The manual lists up to 128GB, so sticking with 32GB pairs makes sense. From what I remember, the 12th generation/600 boards were released before 24/48GB sticks became common, and BIOS updates helped improve compatibility. Newer models should work fully with these sticks right away, though speeds might be lower for 192GB than advertised. The 64GB sticks likely appeared after the 12th-14th gen CPUs, but BIOS updates are still available. When new memory hits the market, Intel usually refreshes its entries, even if manufacturers don’t update their specs or QVL pages. I’m confident the 12th gen can handle 192GB, but 64GB sticks remain uncommon—especially with four 64GB modules.
My view is that using the newest BIOS should ensure compatibility. For instance, Asus added it to their BIOS update for the Strix Z690-E here. However, the spec page still lists 192GB. Interestingly, this timing matched when MSI revealed support for 256GB, possibly indicating a joint effort with Intel or memory manufacturers.
