Ubisoft might have been unaware of SMAA and considered it identical to FXAA.
It might depend on several factors... Such as CPU/Drivers/overall system stability and what applications were running then. At 270x it's not extremely powerful, but it should handle 1080p without dropping to low settings. Also, 1600x900 is quite close and offers a solid improvement.
Even with Fxaa, I still find it tough to accept... what processor are you running?
The game operates as it did before, and your GTX 970 is handling it well.
Works well under load, handles heavy workloads smoothly. Do you own it? I have it, though I didn't set it up until now. My R9-290 with a 1040Mhz is just below your specs, and I run fine. Just avoid MSAA and you'll be good. I'm using Ultra Spec without MSAA or Soft Shadows (opt for High Shadows instead). Performance is usually solid at 40-65fps (often near the high end of 50-60fps). FXAA tends to mess up most games, but in this case it's actually performing well—Unity is the exception. You're going to be extremely surprised by how good FXAA is here... honestly, it's a real win and lets you maintain smooth FPS for playing.
I realized how impressive this game looks with FXAA, so I started this thread to share it. Many people mentioned it's poorly optimized before, but they were just using incorrect settings. The game is actually quite enjoyable, and the story is nice. I'm only about 10% done, but I'll finish it for sure.
He has a 780, very near the 970 range; together with me (290), everything works well, you'll too.
I would configure these parameters: Environment quality set to HIGH, Texture quality at HIGH (ultra for 280X given the 3GB VRAM), Shadow quality also HIGH (reduce to medium if frame rate drops), Ambient occlusion HBAO+, Anti-Aliasing using FXAA, and Bloom enabled.
