Optimize PC setup for rendering with a Ryzen 9 7950X
I collaborate with architecture renders and have the following configuration. Budget is around 3000$. Hardware includes: Ryzen 9 7950x, ASUS TUF Gaming RTX 4070 Ti OC, Gigabyte X670E AORUS Master, GB SKILL Trindal Z5 Neo RGB 32GB, 6000Hz, Noctua NH-D15S Chromax Black cooler, Fractal Design Meshify 2 case, Corsair RM850X Shift PSU, 2TB Samsung 990 Pro SSD. I would appreciate any recommendations if something doesn’t fit well or offers better value. My main concern is the cooler—should I choose this model or a liquid one like Corsair ICUE H150i Elite LCD instead? Also, could switching to an RTX 4070 help reduce costs? Thank you in advance.
I'm testing a Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black with my 7950X and it maintains the CPU temperature at a consistent 89°C during 36-hour video renders. I'm not using PBO. Verify if the Trident RAM is listed on the Gigabyte X670E Qualified Vendor List. Running a 6000MT/s XMP overclock might be challenging, but adjusting CL (CAS) timings could enhance stability. Confirm whether 32GB RAM is sufficient for your rendering software; avoid adding extra DIMMs later if you aim to keep high-speed XMP settings. Acquire the appropriate amount of RAM initially and stick with two DIMMs. Opting for a more affordable GPU with fewer CUDA cores may extend render times. If you switch to a GPU with just 8GB VRAM, assess its impact on performance. Also, consider the GPU memory bandwidth (128/192/256/384-bit) for your applications.
Thank you for your reply. I reviewed the RAM compatibility with the MB and everything seems fine. I chose 32 GB as it was commonly recommended across various sources for this model. Would you recommend upgrading to 64 GB (2x32)? Perhaps considering another model? I’m also curious if the additional cost really added significant value.
As he mentioned, this depends on the complexity of your architecture models; you need to understand how much memory your software consumes during more demanding projects. It's mainly about having two DIMs to ensure they operate efficiently, but if you add more later, performance may decrease slightly.
I know exactly what you mean. My 32 RAM is functioning properly, but it fails on specific tasks. I thought a newer and improved version would make a difference. Thanks for the feedback.
You should verify the suggested RAM amount for your applications, not just the minimum specs. Also, confirm whether your apps gain advantages from quicker RAM speeds. It's preferable to have extra memory capacity rather than constantly reaching the maximum.
I purchased two 32GB DDR5 4800MT/s RAM units in December 2022, rather than two 16GB 6000MT/s ones at a similar cost, since high-speed memory was costly at the time. My video rendering programs don’t see significant gains from faster RAM, though they still require ample memory to function efficiently.
AMD Ryzens may be more selective regarding RAM compatibility. Few kits include EXPO profiles (for AMD), while most come with XMP support (for Intel). Look up online for any compatibility issues related to your RAM choice on AMD motherboards.
