I’ve been using an older Intel “Family PC” for years. It’s performed well, with only one drive swap in six years and minimal downtime—mostly my responsibility. I run TrueNAS Scale ElectricEel. The issue is the boot setup: I’ve been using an SD card as the boot pool, which I now consider a poor choice. I’m switching to a laptop hard drive connected via a USB enclosure. This prompted me to think about upgrading. The DH67BL board is outdated and has compatibility problems, but it offers five SATA ports—perfect for my USB setup. I’m thinking DDR4, likely around a Ryzen 5 3600. My priorities are running Plex, Audiobookshelf, N8n, and other productivity apps at the same time; local AI processing is a big plus. At least six SATA ports are necessary, though I’d like to know about incremental upgrades without full server mode. A built-in 1Gb Ethernet helps, and a PCIe card is available if needed. The main question is: how do people upgrade their NAS from an old PC to a server? Is there a compromise solution or should I invest all at once?
