Seeking a file transfer method compatible with various networks using your IP address. Prioritizing strong Windows and Linux compatibility, speed, and secure login handling on the server side. Currently, the connection relies on gigabit Ethernet through your router, delivering decent throughput but not optimal. FTP via proftpd on Ubuntu Server 18.04 proved too slow for practical use. Your local drives perform well with SMB, suggesting higher speeds are possible. Aiming for reliable performance across platforms with robust credential support. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's definitely unusual since FTP remains the simplest method, which is why it's so fast. On the flip side, FTP lacks strong security features and shouldn't be used unless you're comfortable with open access and don't mind the risks of password exposure. I usually prefer FTP over a VPN (hosted on my router) to balance speed and performance, as it tends to perform better than SCP or SFTP. Even with SMB over a VPN, stability is key for reliable results.
