They won't be able to use the second router directly because of the poor WiFi signal. It's better to lay a network cable downstairs and install a switch there.

It's possible to achieve this. I tested it and it functions well enough. Just ensure the second router has a wired connection to the first one for noticeable improvement.

For optimal performance when using a second router as an access point, connect a cable from the primary router to it and set the configuration to AP mode. Employing a router or comparable device as a Wi-Fi repeater may yield comparable or reduced speeds based on its positioning.
