Operating system issues on Windows 11 affecting performance
Over the last few months I've experienced problems where Windows 11 would lag or freeze. It wasn't just one app but any program—Dota 2, Steam, and Opera GX were most affected. The system would slow down significantly, making it hard to use the mouse or keyboard. Even the taskbar and fullscreen apps would become unresponsive. Once things calmed down, everything worked again after a short wait. I initially thought it was Windows 11 because one program stalled long enough to stop responding, but it wasn't just a simple "Program not responding" message. I could still move the mouse and type with the keyboard. When the app resumed, my input persisted in places like a search bar, even though it wasn’t visible during the freeze. However, I couldn’t drag windows around or use alt-tab functionality. I updated my BIOS and driver for the motherboard and graphics card, checked all drivers in ASUS Armory Crate, and ran a scan with Malwarebytes, which detected some viruses. The problem kept happening after cleaning up those threats. I’m worried it might be unresolvable due to the infections. My hardware includes an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, ROG Strix X570-E, a new motherboard (RMA'd in Feb 2022), a GeForce RTX 3080, a 2x Samsung SSD, and a Kingston SA400S3 SSD. The power supply is an EVGTA 1000QG 1000W, and I’m using a Skill Trident Z Neo.
The check revealed no issues; all my drives were already current. I assumed the SSD might be lagging due to lower quality, but it had 100 GB free so it wasn’t overloaded. I freed an additional 20 GB there. My games and Steam are also using other SSDs.
No, this only checks the wear level of the SSD. Have you attempted running chkdsk c: /scan followed by chkdsk c: /f?
No issues detected. The second scan will only process after a system restart. I’ll run it soon and share the outcome.
