Operating Ryzen 5 3600 with high temperatures and throttling under an air cooler
I decided to try my R5 3600 recently and found that my CPU operates between 80-74°C during heavy use at normal factory temperatures with fans running at full speed (I used 95°C if possible). I thought this was acceptable because the AMD site mentions a maximum of 95°C. After checking Task Manager, I noticed the CPU was throttling and only reaching 3.8 GHz instead of its usual 4 GHz, with no single-core boost. I’m puzzled about this behavior. I’ve replaced the cooler and applied new thermal paste. I’m using a H100i Pro Water cooler, and Corsair Link reports the liquid temperature at 26.5°C. I also observed a significant drop in voltage under load—could that be the issue? I’ll share some screenshots of full-load and idle conditions if helpful. Also, my motherboard is a ROG STRIX B450-F.
Are you looking to verify the pump operation? What is the fan curve? How are your fans configured? Check the RAD voltage.
You checked your CPU and it showed 80-87°C, yet it seemed to be limiting performance which shouldn’t happen until 95°C. This contradicts what I thought about how these things function. It could mean my understanding is wrong or there’s another factor at play—perhaps a different type of throttle or an inaccurate temperature reading. I don’t believe the cooling system is involved since nothing reached 95°C.
