This setup seems feasible for running a Minecraft server for a small group over a short period. The recent SSD upgrade helps, though the storage expansion options are limited. Running it 24/7 is possible but will strain the system. Compared to other experiences, this setup offers a practical alternative to paying for external services.

I've previously set up MC servers on the Core2Duo e8500 with 6GB of RAM. They performed well for roughly 3 to 5 players, based on what I understand about MC servers being single-threaded. If you plan to upgrade, consider a strong single-threaded option like CMIIW and add more RAM if needed.

They say it runs on one core, but I actually understand better. The issue with upgrading the CPU is that the motherboard is an HP exclusive model. That means you're limited to options like FX-8100 (Zambezi) 95W, FX-8120 (Zambezi) 95W, or FX-8150 (Zambezi) 125W. I'm not sure if these are significantly improved. XD

Consider using a dedicated computer for the server.

The fx series struggles with single-core performance and none of its models surpass the 6100. It should handle a 10-person Minecraft server fine, but be aware it will consume a lot of power since the fx series isn’t very efficient.

I wouldn't try to play on the computer; instead, run the server. I just built a machine for myself, so this shouldn't be an issue.

Sure, I'll check if I can gather everyone to test it. If it fails, would you expect around a couple of hundred USD for a suitable build?

Don't just seek a like for an i7 4th gen used Dell from eBay. Go for the tower model if possible, so you can use it later for other projects too. Those processors are excellent and handle ten players smoothly.

Execute it now. If it fails, construct an E3 1240 V2/V3 rig with 16GB RAM—plenty for an MC server.
