So I own this second PC that anyone can use when they're over. The CPU (5800x) has an issue with the PBO, which leads to random blue screens during startup. I had it off recently and tried to boost performance by manually changing the BIOS settings from 3.8 to 4.6, which worked fine. There were some crashes at 4.7, but I didn’t want to increase voltage further or think it was caused by the PBO. I left it at 4.6.
My question is, how much does running at a higher clock speed affect its lifespan? Or is it okay if it runs around 45-50°C during idle, sometimes reaching up to 60°C when browsing online? It’s quite hot outside right now, and on startup I’ve seen temperatures go as high as 75°C.
I believe increasing speed does not inherently lead to degradation. The main concern lies in maintaining appropriate voltage and managing the resulting temperatures. As long as you stay within recommended voltage ranges and temperatures remain acceptable, the chip should perform well over time. Be mindful of auto-settings during overclocking, as they can sometimes cause excessive power draw. Look for stable configurations with suitable voltage if longevity is your goal. The 5800x remains a solid CPU choice, while the 5700x is still functional in its current setup.
