I understand, my system had Windows but after shutting it down last night all startup choices vanished

Verify your boot order and confirm "Windows Boot Manager" is positioned at the very leftmost position.

It seems you've managed to set up the bootloader on one drive and the operating system on another... that's quite a workaround!

This situation is atypical. The system should include a Windows Boot Manager, which initiates the boot process following the POST verification.

That could be an issue, but someone can help me if I'm mistaken—it should work at least to start unless it's unsure about the operating system.
