I reduced the fan speed to 20% on my HTPC's Reference 5770. I wanted to see how it performed and checked the temperature after a few shows—still around 99°C, working smoothly.
It seems unusual. They weren’t designed to limit performance based on temperature. A 90°C reading shouldn’t cause immediate failure. Maybe something else caused their shutdown.
Just send them a return request. Issue resolved. Just make sure the cards aren’t damaged—95°C operation is possible for 290, and VRMs handle up to 120°C.
