I purchased a Ryzen 7 5800X on New Year’s Day and installed it in my old B450 Tomahawk motherboard. It failed to boot, and all the fans ran at full speed. I assumed the problem was with the motherboard since I had the latest BIOS. Now that I have a new motherboard, the GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Elite, I’m wondering why it still isn’t working. Fans are still loud, no indicator lights are showing. I’ve tried booting without RAM or any drives connected just to test if they were causing issues. Still nothing. I’m using the newest BIOS version and it works perfectly with my 2700X. I’ve already sent it back via RMA for the 5800X twice—maybe it’s not a defective chip. What’s going on?
BIOS upgrade is probably necessary. It seems the board may need a BIOS update to run Zen3. If the problem isn’t related to BIOS, it could stem from missing support for other components needed for the 5800X. I’ve noticed this issue with A320 boards—older models like 3600X or newer might fail to boot with M.2s or specific GPUs.
Given most AM4 boards can handle up to 5950x, I believe the BIOS settings for ftpm should be adjusted or reset when a new CPU is added. If you had this option turned on, update it after installing the new processor. Clear the CMOS and then boot into BIOS using the 2700x, turning off all TMP-related configurations. After that, reinstall the 5800x and watch for BIOS notifications during startup. When I moved from a 3800x to a 5950x, the fTPM had to be reset. Since my Odyssey G7 often loses connection in these cases, I connected another monitor to see the on-screen message. Aorus Elite definitely works with Zen 3. I own the same board and it functions excellently with the 5950x.
There are some boards that don't work well with certain upgrades, especially those that only support a small selection of devices. In 2020, my B450M Bazooka refused to run with a GTX1650S upgrade. It started working with the original GT1030, but after trying the GTX1650S multiple times it stopped and needed a return. This seems similar to what you're describing.
