Only in certain web browsers?
I’ve recently faced problems when trying to download files via internet browsers on my network. My usual speeds are around 20 Mbps for download and 15 Mbps for upload. When using Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, my connection drops to very slow rates—about a Mb every 3 to 5 seconds. However, downloading games through Steam works much better. This issue has affected multiple devices on my wireless network. Hope this helps!
depends on the server location and its speed, Steam offers quicker servers and more options globally, while a web browser might only have around 10 Mbps upload in some areas
Are you checking performance with download speeds or transfer rates? They measure different things. Pressing CTRL+J will display the rate you’re seeing. What type of wireless gear are you using?
I'm using Google's Mesh Wi-Fi setup. For comparison, downloading a 5GB game on Steam would take roughly 30-45 minutes. Downloading a 3GB file from a browser usually takes around 3+ hours, depending on the site. Chrome is my primary browser, and the problem disappears when I connect via mobile hotspot from my phone.
Are there many extensions running in your Chrome setup? Is this the first time you installed Chrome or has it been updated recently? Consider testing by downloading a big file via Chrome on another device to observe the behavior.
The problem happens with any browser I use. I only have three extensions installed: AdBlocker, Privacy.com, and a pop-up blocker. I've also tried reinstalling Chrome and Firefox completely before accessing anything.
