Hey guys, i have a hp z400 that i just upgraded the cpu in to a x5680 and when i try to install 8 gig ram in it the system only sees half of what the stick is. if i put in a 8 gig stick it sees 4 and if i put in a 16 gig stick it sees 8 gig. it has the 3.61 bios. and the ram is none ecc. i have receted the cpu to see if it was amounting issue but that did not fix it. i do have another hp z400 i can try. they are both the 6 mem slot boards
i know this is cliche but ive seen a youtube video where the guy put 6 sticks of duel rank 8 gig ecc ram and got 48 gigs. if i load mine up with 4 sticks of 16 gig and 2 sticks of 8 gig the system sees 40 gigs. he was using a w5580 xeon and im using a x5680
The dual CPU setup unlocks the device, allowing it to function properly. Only a few specific RAM modules support the Z400 model, which can cause issues and force the system to accept 8GB sticks. Those options are uncommon and not well-known. The hardware is fully capable of handling 8GB memory, but the BIOS settings need adjustment.
It's unusual, hasn't I noticed anything similar on either of my Z400 models? Officially they should be fine with standard non-ECC DDR3 up to 8GB DIMMs for a combined total of 48GB (or 32GB in the earlier 4 DIMM version). Most ECC-registered drives don't work.
