Hey! Yesterday I purchased an SSD and set up Windows 8.1 on my gaming rig. I need to allow my dad access, especially since he sometimes uses USB ports. I realized I have a decent understanding of PCs—my build was successful, and I know it’s risky to compromise a system. I don’t use pirated games; I rely on Steam and Origin. My “activators” are downloaded from developer forums to prevent malware. I’m using a KMS solution, though I’m not sure if that’s safe in those communities.

My dad occasionally plugs in a USB from Office Depot or a plotter, which can introduce viruses. Despite this, my PC boots quickly (under 10 seconds), games run smoothly, and everything feels fast. I haven’t installed antivirus yet.

With Windows 7, I used Eset Smart Security with trial licenses and created a non-admin account for my dad. I’m currently using Windows Defender and a limited account for him. Should I install another AV with trial licenses just to be extra cautious? It’s concerning because my dad sometimes tries to connect infected USBs without realizing the risks, especially since he prefers using my PC over his own laptop.

Any tips would be appreciated! Maybe I should adjust Windows 8.1 to look less like Windows 7 to avoid confusion, as he disliked the original version.

Obtain malware bytes and a restricted account would be beneficial.

Great question! For infected USBs, Windows Defender can detect threats, but Malwarebytes offers deeper scanning. Be cautious about autorun features to prevent unwanted execution.

You're protected against the autorun virus, but the USB copying virus remains a threat.

Windows Defender doesn't offer instant protection for USB scans like ESET does when you connect devices.

Windows Defender safeguards by removing shortcuts, which is very helpful, though the shortcuts still get made and removed.

It's wiser to opt for greater safety by setting up ESET with trial licenses.

ESET performs well, but it doesn't meet your expectations. I'm not your parent.
