I am using Windows 10 on an older Dell xps900 and have been experiencing startup problems for a year. Every third or fourth time I try to start it, nothing happens except the usual fix of unplugging the computer, holding down the start button for ten seconds, then plugging it back in. My repair shop tried various solutions over several weeks without success. They replaced the power supply, swapped the memory, ran diagnostics and virus scans, but nothing changed. When I brought it home, I replaced the CMOS battery and reset the BIOS settings, which briefly resolved the issue for a week before it returned to no-start. The only strange thing was that the latest Windows 10 update kept failing, and every few months it would update to the same version marked as successful, only to try again a month later. My update list keeps showing twenty of the same update repeatedly marked as successful. My system isn’t compatible with Windows 11, and staying on the legacy version is necessary for my audio workstation. It would cost me thousands of dollars to replace it and install new software. Any suggestions?

I would download crystaldiskinfo to check if your storage drives are functioning properly. As an older Dell user, I wouldn't be too surprised if you have a failing capacitor on the motherboard.

I experienced some unusual problems with Dell and Windows 10. The main issues were that the computer would work fine after a fresh Windows installation for about a week, but then something changed. The "C" drive would switch from being labeled "C" to "E". Also, during updates, I found that installing updates wasn't working properly—having to manually stop the process and make sure updates ignored it when they tried. I thought it was an update issue, as removing the problematic update resolved the problem and everything worked again.
