OneDrive sync
OneDrive sync
Hi,
I’m facing a straightforward issue: I need to link my OneDrive with my computer.
My PC holds a significant amount of data—around 1 TB—comprising photos, videos, documents, programs, projects, and more.
I back up this information onto my local drive, two external drives, and a OneDrive account under a Microsoft 365 Family plan.
Before, I had to manage everything manually; each file addition, deletion, or change required handling across four different places, which was extremely time-consuming.
Then I discovered an app called FreeFileSync, which simplifies the process by syncing changes with just one click to the external drives.
However, the OneDrive part remained problematic. The app didn’t work well, and other sync tools failed to function properly.
FreeFileSync offers options to connect Google Drive, SFTP servers, or FTP servers, but it couldn’t add OneDrive directly.
I found a workaround by adding a network drive in Windows File Explorer and using FreeFileSync with it.
But I still faced an issue: Microsoft OneDrive alters certain symbols on the drive, which appear correctly in the Windows File Explorer but not in the OneDrive client.
This discrepancy is detailed in a Microsoft support article (link provided).
I need a solution where Windows File Explorer no longer treats these characters differently, or a more effective syncing method for my OneDrive account that allows me to initiate the sync with a single click and handle everything independently.
Thank you!
OneDrive manages its synchronization independently. Simply enable it and allow it to function as intended.
Yes, it has a separate folder for syncing data from OneDrive to your PC, ensuring only specific parts are updated. I prefer having filters in place. My past experience with the OneDrive app was very poor—it reorganized all default folders, making them unusable, and it doesn’t support custom folder synchronization. You can either move all files to the desktop or documents folder (which lacks space on your C drive) or designate your hard disk as the primary OneDrive location.
There is one drive that can be fully customized:

If this doesn’t meet your needs, then OneDrive might not be the right choice for you.
The configuration is only for where the files on OneDrive will be downloaded to. I don't have enough space on my C disk for that. There is no option to select a folder on another disk and get it to sync WITH the cloud, not the other way around:
The only backup option is for three non-configurable default windows folders:
The location I'm trying to synchronize with OneDrive is D:\...
I found this discussion on the Microsoft support site:

It outlines my issue closely, and I plan to see if the suggested solution helps.
