I've tried Heroes in Generals—it's fine. The wait for the next match or finding one is about five minutes. I also have CodeWaw, but the servers often have some changes. I'd like something similar to Battlefield 1 (I don't own it yet... I'm waiting until it becomes available on EA).
You have a spending limit of 20 dollars, possibly up to 40 if essential.
Battlefield 1942 is an older title, yet a genuine World War II experience. It was quite large back then, and most players should be able to run it at top performance. (Who can resist this nowadays...) However, if you decide to play, try setting it lower. High settings make it tough to see anyone hiding among the grass. Lower settings let you spot them easily.
You mentioned 1942, but the context seems to relate to a list or series numbered 1942. It looks like you're comparing different entries—Verdun and Day of Infamy—and unsure which fits best. Clarify if you'd like a summary or recommendations based on what you're looking for.
Do you enjoy milsims? I’ve found a solid free alternative called Project Reality. It’s a heavily modified version of Battlefield 2 featuring excellent WWII maps. You can play on a Past Conflicts server where each match involves about 100 players. A microphone enhances the experience, and the maps are massive. They transform standard Battlefield layouts into intense one-on-one arenas. I strongly suggest giving it a try. http://www.realitymod.com/
Military Simulator. It's like ARMA, but PR(Project Reality) has a WAAY better community. There's a game like it on Steam called Squad-I tried it but it's not as good. I found one of the dev's videos who always frequently plays the game-this is a full round on the Omaha Beach map. The recording isn't good, and it is way more fun than it looks if you join a good squad.
