One game is cutting off my internet connection in a strange way
Hi, is your whole internet suddenly going down, like you can't even get the Wi-Fi on your phone? Is the router turning itself off and back on by itself? If that's what's happening, it might be a problem with the heat or something broken in the router. Back when we used the Superhub 1 (from Virgin Media) here in the UK, sometimes downloading a Steam game would make the router restart again and again, stopping us from getting things done. It could also be a virus, so can you run a scan using Windows Defender? I think you're probably on Windows 10 or 11 anyway. Thanks.
I probably should've said that earlier (sorry!) but this only turns off the internet on the PC; the router is totally fine. Also, I'm using an ethernet cable on my PC. I have Windows 10 installed. And it's funny you bring up the virus thing because that's been worrying me all along - like it acts like a virus. Yeah, when I turn the game off, turn Steam off, log out of my Windows profile, and log back in = still no internet. I ran a network scan with zero results. I tried putting the PC into sleep mode instead of shutting it down or restarting; but it's done this weird thing where my keyboard and mouse lights are on (they always turn off in sleep mode) and half of the PC lights went off, while the fan lights stay on along with the generic RGB light on the CPU cooler. I've already run a full ESET scan about a week ago so before installing the game and now my quick Windows Defender scan just kind of freezes halfway through (lol). Should I run another full ESET scan instead? Could it be "that easy"?
First off, check what's wrong with your Windows setup. Open Start and go to Command Prompt. Right-click that option and choose Run as administrator. Type this command to fix the Windows 10 files: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth Then wait a bit if it gets stuck, just keep pressing Enter until it's done. After that open CMD again and type sfc /scannow to check for problems in your programs. When you're finished tell me what happened here. How long have you been using your computer? Do you have many different apps installed or do you install a lot of new stuff sometimes?
I fixed things, then ran a scan and it said some files were broken and it fixed them all. If you want to know more about what got changed on the internet version, look at this file called CBS.log in the Windows folder: C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. But if you want to see details from when I turned off the computer, check a different log file using that /OFFLOGFILE flag command. The big list of changes on the C drive is just a bunch of words I don't get at all. I've had this computer and Windows running for over a year now. I try not to have too much useless stuff installed because every app I use has to be very important to me.
That might make WD think something in the game is fake. Have you tried turning off Exclusion for that game in Windows Defender? I should also warn: don't have two antivirus programs on your PC at once. Pick just one, like Windows Defender or ESET, but never both. Sometimes, when two tools fight over who watches your PC, it causes the computer to shut down. If you got the game from Steam, bad stuff related to it is probably not there, because Steam's security is pretty strong. But don't think that means no viruses exist anywhere else; they just aren't likely since this only happens when you open the game.
Oh, I did a quick system check. I turned on the defender because that's what I needed. And yes, ESET is installed for Steam too. Maybe I can try tomorrow if fixing it helped before, but honestly, my PC seems to be getting tired from all those shut downs.
You said it was a Windows Defender scan. WD doesn't normally freeze during the process. But if it finds something suspicious, it often just moves it to quarantine instead of stopping completely. If that fails and there are corrupt files, running sfc /scannow was a good idea.
I mean, just kidding. Hard power off is probably bad for a PC if you do it all the time. I'd rather just reinstall Windows because one crazy game was enough to make me want it.
