Older laptop struggles to connect new SSD device
Trying to enhance this laptop with additional RAM and storage because it only has a traditional hard drive. Installed new DDR4 RAM, which works fine. Added a new SSD, but it isn’t being detected in disk management or even listed as a disk part in the command prompt. A server on Discord confirmed PCIe compatibility, so the SSD type shouldn’t matter. On Reddit, others mentioned it’s too recent for the motherboard and suggested a M.2 SATA 3 SSD. I found a compatible SSD from TEAMGROUP: MP33 1TB SLC Cache 3D NAND TLC NVMe 1.3 PCIe Gen3x4 M.2. Just need to verify it’s a Gen 3 SSD before purchasing a newer model if required. Motherboard: ASUSTek Computer INC. CPU: Intel I7-6700HQ 2.60GHz RAM: Kingston Fury Impact 16GB (8GB x2) at 2666MHz DDR4
The PCIe version isn't crucial; Gen 4 works with Gen 3 but operates at reduced speeds. Focus on the socket type—check the M.2 connector to determine the correct SSD model. There are NVMe PCIe (M key notch) and SATA PCIe (B+M, two notches) variants. Details about these differences can be found at the provided link.
Watched a video about switching to an SSD, thought NVMe wouldn't work with this laptop. Used the same port I have and installed a SATA PCIe card instead.
