I recently placed my PC setup beside the modem, but lag persists in certain games. It’s unclear if the issue stems from the game servers or the modem, as we’ve had this modem for more than six years and it wasn’t the most advanced model then. I suspect some packet loss occurs during gameplay, causing frame lag to appear, yet my game still maintains over 200 FPS.

It seems the issue might be with the modem. Is the problem limited to a single game or does it affect multiple games?

I mainly play League of Legends and don’t usually try other multiplayer games. If you get a new modem, look for reliable brands that fit under $100.

Verify if ms increases, which may cause QoS problems.

That’s not a regular modem—it’s a gateway. Understanding the right terms is important. A gateway combines a modem and router into one unit. Performance tends to be average. If you purchase another gateway, similar problems could arise. For changing modems on Cox’s network, you should contact Cox directly to confirm compatibility. They may provide guidelines or specify which models are supported. It really depends on the ISP’s policies.

She signed up for Google Rewards and received a Linksys router. It might help to purchase a compatible modem, but you should choose one that matches the router's specifications.

Currently the top options are Docsis 3.1 modems, which match your cable provider’s fastest offerings. The CM500, CM600, and SB6183 also perform well. The choice depends on your speed plan. Starting with Docsis 3.0 systems introduced channel bonding for higher speeds, giving more downstream and upstream channels. Their 4x4, 8x4, 16x4, 24x8, and 32x8 configurations are available, though the 32x8 models are not recommended due to defects. Your ISP recommends a minimum of a 16x4 modem, which can deliver up to 150 Mbps on an 8x4 setup—significantly more than Comcast’s current limits. Docsis 3.1 models use 32x8 and support OFDMA modulation for even faster performance. For the best results, look up your ISP’s supported devices online or reach out directly to confirm compatibility. Comcast’s extensive catalog includes tested modems at local stores, offering reliable performance.
