Old games that have/haven't stood the test of time
I nearly neglected to mention it. A classic I occasionally revisit is the first Star Wars Battlefront. I prefer it over the later installments.
The visuals are passable (obviously not comparable to current standards), and honestly, the other non-player character companions are remarkably frustrating— yet the game genuinely captures the spirit of Star Wars and provides considerable enjoyment.
I’ve been particularly focused on this lately. Lately, they've released numerous technically impressive games – but how many of them actually offer genuine amusement?
I would also recommend Terraria and Diablo 2. The gameplay remains fun and, in my opinion, they’ve held up reasonably well. Not perfectly, but still.
I hesitate to include Terraria due to its relative newness; despite its initial release eight years ago, substantial updates continue to be released, positioning it as a presently active game. I haven’t played it in quite some time and was contemplating revisiting it, but with the final major planned update anticipated within the next few months, I may choose to postpone my return.
For this particular compilation, I would restrict my choices to games that are at least ten years old. Games from only a few years prior generally don't undergo significant enough transformations to warrant consideration when compared to more recent releases. If a game released relatively recently still exhibits considerable flaws, it’s likely those issues were already present upon its initial launch, even if many players chose to ignore them.
That’s reasonable, however that’s the reason I established the restriction of 4+ years – ten years is considered mature but four years is a significant period, and most of the games discussed have been older than four years; I concur with you regarding Terraria, though it's debatable whether it’s outdated, I understand your perspective.
It astonishes me that nobody’s discussed Skyrim.
From the truly classic titles:
The initial RollerCoaster Tycoon series,
Half-Life
Warcraft 3
I strongly disagree that the engine used in Skyrim is outdated; the combat feels quite awkward and the physics are terribly flawed (horses, the Dragonborn, and mountains frequently resulting in upward climbs). Furthermore, the graphics themselves aren't particularly impressive considering its age. Despite this, it remains enjoyable, but only when enhanced with modifications – at the time it was acceptable, however now it feels rather lackluster without them.
The fan-made modifications are what I’m referring to. Disagree with the gameplay mechanics? A modification exists to address that. Unhappy with the visuals? There’s a solution available. Don't enjoy the battles? You can find a corresponding adjustment.
As far as I know, it is the most heavily modified game ever made, and individuals continue to develop new additions.
Oh, I believed you were referring to vanilla ES IV and I genuinely hope ES VI will be functional…despite it being built using the creation engine.
lol, no one under the age of 30 remembers playing MDK. It was an amazing game though, both of them.
The Thief titles were among the greatest video games created, and despite their noticeably old visuals, remain incredibly impressive.
