Hello! Two months back I built a new PC for a friend, just like we often do in our circle (I’m probably the same person you’re in). The issue is pretty specific: whenever he opens Microsoft Word, his computer frequently freezes—just stops working and then resumes without losing any progress. It doesn’t fully restart; it’s like it pauses and wakes up. He plays a lot of Team Fortress 2 and watches YouTube, but I asked him to keep track of these crashes. His crash logs show they only happen while he’s using Word. The Event Viewer doesn’t display anything unusual at the exact moments it happens.
I’ve reinstalled Office several times (or maybe “copilot 365” for some reason), but nothing changed. I turned off all performance and power settings, flashed the BIOS, and even used a cooler that wasn’t great. The PC never overheats during normal use—only when I ran Cinebench for 10 minutes, which reached 93°C, but it didn’t crash.
He wants something affordable so he can upgrade later. His specs are: Ryzen 8700G (just enough for TF2 on a low-res screen), MSI PRO B650-S WIFI Corsair Vengeance 2 x 16GB at 5200 MHz, Crucial P3 1TB NVMe, Corsair RM650. The case is from his old rig, and I’m using two SATA SSDs and one HDD.
Tomorrow I’ll visit his place and reinstall Windows completely. In the meantime, do you think this might be a known problem? I’d appreciate any insight so I can try it out myself if a fresh install doesn’t help. Thanks, and sorry for any unclear English!
Run the Disk with C: tool. Plug in only the disk and disconnect all others. Before reinstalling Windows, launch an admin Command Prompt. Execute this command: DISM /Online /CLEANUP-IMAGE /RestoreHealth. After completion, type SFC /scannow and press Enter. These steps will fix any missing system files. I’m aware you reinstalled Office 365 but haven’t tried repairing Word? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/offi...b40c5bb88b. With all drives connected, download DiskGenius or Crystal Disk Info and review the SMART status of each drive. If any show issues, replace them. You may also perform a Clean Boot to test stability. If successful, you can proceed as is. To identify the problem, add services or startup items one by one until the issue resolves.
Thank you so much for the ideas! I'll try them out and update you soon.
Recent updates: no success with any advice. Cleaning the Windows image didn’t fix the problem, and all drives appear normal (checked with Crystal Disk Info). I performed a full install of Windows (not a repair), but the same issue persists—seems hardware-related rather than software. Could you start testing one component first?
