People often choose a trackball because it tends to be more precise, though speed can be a drawback.
That was more of a troll attempt, but trackballs do have acceleration. All the best come from opto-mechanical systems, which are pretty precise and straightforward. I’d rather use a mouse instead of a drawing pad for games—it really doesn’t add much value. You can’t improve accuracy with a mouse unless you actually use one. I think it probably began with artists who modified it for creative reasons, since this kind of community tends to be either lazy or just curious enough to experiment.
