Oculus development kit version 2 released in 2020
I've been searching for VR headsets for a while, and the Oculus development kit 2 headset has stood out lately because it's become more affordable. I'm curious if it's still a solid choice for playing Minecraft VR or drawing. Also, does it support Minecraft (ViveCraft) with specific controllers, or would you need to use your computer? Thanks a lot!
The DK2 is quite outdated now and doesn't seem to work with the latest Oculus updates. You might still locate old drivers on the official site, but I haven't confirmed its support for modern software. It didn't come with controllers originally, though some users paired it with Razer Hydra in the past. If you're not purchasing it new, consider a used or refurbished version with controllers. The Samsung Odyssey was the top alternative before, and WMR headsets generally offer a superior experience while still being compatible with current Windows drivers and Steam. You'll need Bluetooth version 4 or higher built into your device or a USB adapter to connect the controllers. An Oculus CV1 with touch controls and at least two cameras could work if you find it affordable, but keep in mind replacement cables are no longer available—handle the cable carefully or the headset won't function properly.
I understand the situation, it's a complex project. You were considering adding PSMove controllers and possibly Wi-Fi modules to make it work. It's a bit unusual, but it's definitely something you could explore.
I think third-party drivers and apps might function with a different controller setup in Steam, but it will need significant adjustments from your side. Game features could be less accurate because you’ll be missing expected controller inputs. If you have free hardware and enough time, try it out and observe the results.
