Occurs exclusively during gameplay sessions
Hello everyone, thank you for your patience. I recently bought a new CPU with an aftermarket fan cooler, a motherboard, RAM, and a case. I kept using my previous PSU, GPU, and SSD. The PC was just assembled yesterday, and I’m already facing frequent crashes or freezes, especially during gaming sessions. I can’t describe the situation quickly enough, so here’s when and how it happens:
First crash: Played XDefiant for about 5 minutes. The screen froze completely while the static noise from the map was still audible. I had to power down the PC using the physical button on the case. It took me around 10 minutes to restart, but every time I tried, I got a black screen.
Second crash: Played XDefiant again after roughly 30 minutes of gameplay. This time it ended with a white screen, and the experience was similar to the first.
Third crash: Today I tried Horizon Zero Dawn to test if the new CPU/RAM would improve my FPS. The benchmark ran smoothly. After about 3 hours of play, the game crashed again. However, once the PC started after the crash, everything worked fine, and I could see the screen properly. This issue only appeared during gaming, not when browsing or using media.
Current setup:
- New Ryzen 7600 (AMD Adrenaline Updated)
- New AsRock A620 (Windows update confirmed)
- 32GB Kingston Fury DDR5 (2x16)
- 1TB Samsung EVO 860 SSD
- Old GTX 1060 (6GB)
- Old 1TB Samsung EVO 860 SSD (updated)
Running Windows 10 Pro (latest version).
I checked RAM health with the built-in diagnostic tool and found no problems. I ran SFC/scannow to check for Windows corruption and also tested the SSD using WMID and disk status commands—no issues detected.
Average temperatures during gaming before crashes:
- CPU: 65°C
- GPU: 60°C
- Motherboard: 35°C
- SSD: around 41°C (monitoring limited)
I don’t have a monitor for the SSD temperature, but I’m hoping you can help identify what’s causing these intermittent failures. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
Did you move your SSD into the new system or install a brand-new Windows version? After upgrading to a different motherboard, platform, CPU, and RAM, I suggest opting for a clean installation. Temperatures are fine, staying well below the safe limits. Your GPU seems a bit outdated and might struggle with driver support. For safety, verify the most recent driver release for your GPU. The 6GB of VRAM could restrict resolution and texture quality in tough games—consider reducing settings to test. Good luck!
It's an older SSD that was formatted before a fresh Windows installation. I suspect the AMD Adrenalin app was misleading me about GPU temperatures. The benchmark results and stress tests showed much higher temps than reported, causing crashes when reaching 75°C. This is unusual since my setup hasn't had similar issues even with the same GPU on an older i7 3770. I usually run at lower resolutions and settings to avoid stressing the GPU, aiming for smoother performance.
The phone link app isn't reliable. I stopped using it to reduce potential issues. The maximum temperature for the GTX 1060 isn't clear, but 75°C might be too high. You might need MSI Afterburner or similar tools. Try setting the GPU fans to full speed and check if stability improves. A thermal issue could be the cause—unmount the GPU cooler, replace the thermal paste and pads, then reinstall. Have a great day!
I'm waiting on something to arrive, then I'll do a new thermal paste and thermal pads for my 1060, and I started using MSI Afterburner and set the fan at 100% and ever since then it stopped crashing..at least for now. Once I clean my GPU and refresh the cooler as mentioned earler, and if I still crash, then it's likely that my old PSU is somehow not keeping up, despite my collective new system using less power compared to before.
