Occasionally it crashes during new builds.
I've recently assembled two new Windows 11 gaming setups. My inquiry is quite direct, yet I haven't found suitable responses online. Do occasional crashes or system failures occur regularly? I'm fairly skilled with various computers, but these two seem to behave strangely. Below are the specifications: CPU: 12900KF GPU: RTX 3080 FE Motherboard: MSI Z690I RAM: 32Gb 5200 DDR5 Storage: WD Black SN850x (1TB) + Crucial SSD (2TB) Case: SSUPD Meshlicious AIO: 280mm Kraken X63 Power: CX750F RGB GPU includes standoffs for airflow; I've designed a custom case fan holder for some small Noctuas to help dissipate heat. Crashes appear mainly under heavy GPU usage. The GPU was previously used, comes with a 2-year warranty, and operates at around 80°C during prolonged heavy loads. I'm about to run a 3DMark test now. A Cinebench score of 26101 indicates the CPU is performing well. As I mentioned, I'm unsure if my issue—periodic full system crashes—is specific to the game (like Red Dead Redemption 2) or something broader. The second rig is nearly identical except for the motherboard, which is from Asus. My son's rig has experienced crashes a few times, most evident on first use or Christmas Day. He definitely reports more crashes. Any advice?
3DMark Time Spy result is 17,151, which falls short of the norm (target average for similar CPU/GPU is 17,726). Performance metrics show CPU at 17,738 and GPU at 17,052. There were no crashes, though I feel the score may hint at a less-than-ideal setup from a compact form factor build. While a better score would reflect improved time, cost, and effort, this isn’t the main reason for asking.
It seems you're wondering if an occasional crash on a new build is typical. Based on your experience, it appears not to be normal, especially with daily use. You mentioned a scene in Red Dead Redemption 2 that repeatedly caused crashes, which you resolved by adjusting graphics settings. A crash in Valheim under high settings also occurred, suggesting instability is possible.
I’m checking the power supply from the wall since the 750-watt PSU was acquired early in the project before I bought the CPU and GPU. It’s definitely smaller than what I’m used to, but it fits inside the case and seems to deliver power effectively while handling heat well through the mesh side. Wall power rarely exceeds around 550 watts.
