Occasional random freezes occur during gameplay in GTA V.
Two days back the game began behaving strangely, often freezing after just about a second. Usually it would run smoothly until then. About two days earlier everything worked fine, but the only change was the installation of the 2004 update. I checked the game files and found some direct X components were added, yet the freezes persisted. I've reinstalled the game now, but it seems unlikely to fix the issue since I've tried two different versions (Epic and Rockstar). I'm considering removing the latest Windows update, though I'm unsure if that would help or not, especially since many users didn't have issues with the 2004 patch. My system specs are: Intel i7-4770 @ ~4.1GHz (OC clock still a problem), Asus GTX 1060 EOG STRIX O6G with 32GB DDR3 RAM, Asus Z97-K R2.0. The game runs on an HDD without thermal throttling, usually maintaining 60fps until it freezes, then drops back to 60. During the freeze, CPU usage plummets from 50-70% to just 5-15%, with occasional spikes to 80-90% before the crash, then briefly at 20%. GPU activity stays low around 25%, and even that drops slightly when a freeze hits. I attached a screenshot from yesterday showing 24GB RAM after adding a new stick.
Settings include Borderless Window at 1440p with FXAA enabled, MSAA set to x2, Nv TXAA disabled, VSync turned off. Population density remains constant across diversity options. Texture quality is excellent, shader performance is high with strong shadows, reflections, and refraction. MSAA is off, water effects are very clear, particles are high, grass is detailed, soft shadows are prominent. Nv PCSS post-processing uses high anisotropic filtering, ambient obscuration is set to x16, tessellation is very high, long shadows appear on high-res screens, and shadows are off. The next adjustment isn’t specified—current settings are active. CPU temperatures are shown in the HWInfo screenshot.
Check if GTA is stored on a mechanical drive or an SSD. If it's an SSD, ensure proper cooling to avoid overheating.
The installation is on an HDD. Also, I re-downloaded the game and it didn’t change. I’ll reinstall the GPU driver next to check if that resolves the issue.
The issue seems to appear only in RDR 2, with freezes being much less frequent. It might be due to the game running poorly overall. Forza Horizon 4 appears stable, while Mans Sky and The Division 2 have unusual audio glitches. Consider uninstalling the latest Windows Update or reinstalling Windows.
I removed the latest Windows update and everything is working well now. It seems the Windows 2004 (may) Update caused an issue, so I’m unsure whether to reinstall it. Has anyone else experienced problems with that update?
