Occasional BSODs with varying messages
I assembled my computer by the end of 2019, and it began experiencing frequent BSODs this year. At first I ignored it, but the occurrences have grown. I think the GPU might be the culprit, though I’m unsure how to confirm. Each crash logs differently. Here’s a summary of the BSOD entries from the Event Viewer: Date Error Note Nov 24, 2023 0x3B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION Nov 20, 2023 0x3B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION What failed: amdkmdag.sys Nov 18, 2023 0x154: UNEXPECTED_STORE_EXCEPTION Nov 17, 2023 0x139: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE Nov 10, 2023 0xD1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Nov 7, 2023 0xA: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Oct 16, 2023 0xD1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Oct 7, 2023 0xA0: INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR Oct 1, 2023 0x7E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Sep 20, 2023 0x18B: SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR Sep 13, 2023 0xF7: DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER Aug 29, 2023 0xD1: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Aug 17, 2023 0x3B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION Aug 8, 2023 0xA0: INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR Jul 31, 2023 0x1C7: STORE_DATA_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION Jul 17, 2023 0xA0: INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR Jun 13, 2023 0x1A: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT Jun 12, 2023 0xEF: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED Jun 8, 2023 0xA0: INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR May 25, 2023 0xA: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL May 12, 2023 0xEF: CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED May 6, 2023 0x133: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION Apr 24, 2023 0xE3: RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED Apr 16, 2023 0x3B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION Mar 21, 2023 0x139: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE Feb 24, 2023 0x9F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE My specifications are: Windows 10 pro, 64bit ASRock Fatal1ty B450 GAMING K4 Ryzen 7 2700 2x8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 3200MHz XMP enabled XFX Radeon RX 570 4GB CORSAIR Force Series MP510 240GB boot drive WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB storage drive Corsair VS550, 550W Things I’ve attempted: sfc /scannow DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth chkdsk (forgot the exact command but it’s the one that forces a reboot and checks the disk) Updated GPU driver Some insights The crashes seem unpredictable. They can happen even while browsing the web. I’ve also noticed a GPU driver timeout, as reported by AMD software. The display will turn black briefly before coming back. I seldom play games. Most of the time I’m just browsing, watching videos, or doing word processing. I put the PC to sleep every night, and only restart it occasionally. Uncertain if this matters? The CPU and GPU temperatures usually stay around 50-60°C. I haven’t seen a sudden rise before a BSOD.
This setup raises concerns about slight RAM issues. The error codes remind me of past problems with 3200MHz RAM and my 1600X experience. Zen/Zen+ don’t handle fast DDR4 well, which is why newer versions like Zen2 and Zen3 improved it. Try lowering the speed to 3000 or 2933 to check if problems disappear. Still, RAM instability can quietly damage files on Windows, so a reinstall might be wise eventually.
RAM issues often become noticeable only after prolonged use because they accumulate stress over time. Disabling XMP can help, but it’s not the only solution—consider checking for other factors like power quality or age of components.
It might be that something shifted just enough, the CPU's thermal management has changed slightly, or the RAM components have shown minor wear... Memory problems can behave unpredictably. You could try different approaches, or you might opt to turn on DOCP and set it to a lower speed manually.
Do you have the specifications? Please note, if needed. Also, ensure the RAM is available in the QVL and that BIOS and chipset drivers are current.
It seems there was a minor adjustment made... A Windows update, whatever it is.
